This very unusual name is believed to have an equally unusual history. It is locational and derives from the Village(s) of Aggerschow in the former Principality of Sleswig, in the period before 1860, part of Denmark. In 1866, the state was annexed by Prussia in a short and bloody war and it would appear that the name first appeared in England at that time suggesting that the removal of the family to England may have been under pressure from the German invaders. The Town name is of pre medieval 11th Century origin and means "the dwellers at the enclosure (gard) by the river (a) in the wood (schow)" - (Norse-Danish). The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Emil Agerskow. which was dated 1922 (deceased), Hull, East Yorkshire during the reign of King George V, The Sailor King, 1910 - 1935. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
