This is a surname of Italian origins, and surnames from this country are the most difficult in all of Europe to provide an accurate etymology for. Oddly, although hereditary surnames were in some vogue in Venice as early as the 10th Century A.D., their use did not spread to the rest of Italy until recent times. Further complications arise because of the excess use of diminutive which are added in profusion to the original "base" to the point where this is reduced to a meaningless one or two letters; however, in the case of "Assiratti" the recordings below retain sufficient "base" to provide the origin. The name is habitational and derives from residence at the Town of Assisi, the present form being a double or even triple patronymic, to give "the son of the son (of the son) of Assisi". The early recordings include Maria Asseretto, christened at Genoa in 1836, and Louis Jules d'Assereto who married Caroline Chamberlyne Dickson at the British Embassy in Parish on March 15th 1845. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Giovanni Battista Assireto, which was dated January 31st, 1800 christened at Rapallo, Genoa, Italy, during the reign of Pope Pius V1, February 15th 1775 to March 14th 1800. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
