The origin of this name is Olde English "Bacga-hlaw" or "the Hill of the Wild Animals", the exact meaning of "Bacga" being unproven, but probably "Badger". It is also probable that a village or hamlet of this name existed, but if so, we have not been able to establish its whereabouts. A village of "Bagelia" was recorded in the Domesday Book for Shropshire and this later developed into "Bagley", but could still have provided the origin for "Baglow" the surname. The name development and recordings include Lewas Baglor, 1794, London and Samuel Biglow who married Mary Wiltshier at St. Danes, Westminster on November 17th 1816 in the reign of George III (1760 - 1820). The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of William Baglow, which was dated 1853, Married Elizabeth Master at St. John the Baptist, Shoreditch, on December 1st, during the reign of Queen Victoria, "The Great White Queen", 1837 - 1901. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
