This rare and unusual name is an 'anglicized' variant spelling of the Olde Breton locational and heraldic surname 'Beaumer', recorded heraldically in Riestapps Armourial General for France pre 1400 A.D.. The name has long been recorded in England and pre - dates the normal Huguenot period (1580 - 1760) but is apparently much later than the Norman Invasion of 1066. The name recordings and development include Agnes Bowner who married Richard Pottell at St. Gregory's Church, London on July 11th 1564 whilst in 1635 Edward Boomer married Ellen Rowe, at St. Dunstans Stepney on the 2nd of February of that year and Edward Bowmer was christened at Prittlewell, Essex in 1787 (date unknown). The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Anne Bowmare, which was dated April 19th 1545, married Rycharde Piet at St. Dionis, Backchurch, London, during the reign of King Henry VIII, 'Bluff King Hal', 1510 - 1548. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
