This interesting surname is of Anglo-Saxon origin, and is a topographical name from residence by a notable broad oak, deriving from the Olde English pre 7th Century "brad", broad, with "ac", oak. A prominent oak tree was frequently the focal point in medieval settlements, where people gathered to hear readings from the Scriptures at the annual ceremony of the beating of the bounds. Topographical surnames were among the earliest created, since both natural and man-made features in the landscape provided easily recognisable distinguishing names in the small communities of the Middle Ages.
