This interesting name is well researched and is of Viking origin where it was a personal name. The first spelling was probably 'Buh' a word meaning 'A Booth' or a place for keeping sheep and cattle. It is possible that the name may have also developed from 'Budd' - the bud (Olde English pre 6th Century). The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Henry Bubbe which was dated 1273, Kirkbys Rolls, Somerset. during the reign of King Edward 1, the Hammer of the Scots, 1272 - 1307 Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
