Recorded in several spelling forms including Chipping, Chippin, Chipan and Cheping, this is an English and specifically Lancashire surname. It is locational and originates from the ancient village of Chipping first recorded in the rolls known as the 'Curia Regis' for the year 1203 in the spelling of 'Chippin'. The meaning of the place name and hence the later surname, is believed to be 'the market place'. The derivation is from the Olde English pre 7th century word 'ceaping', a place where the traders, then known as 'chapmen' set up their different stalls. The village is in the archdeaconry of Lancaster, and it is said that in ancient times the place was also spelt 'Chepin'. The first known surname recording is probably that of John de Chepyn, who appears in 'Baines History of Lancashire', the date being given as 'the 22nd year of the reign of King Edward 111', which was 1349. He died in 1377 after a fifty year reign. Other surname recordings taken from this early times include Agnes de Chypyn of York in the 1379 Poll Tax rolls for that city, whilst rather later we have Thomas Chipping or Chippin, who married Martha Gooding at the church of St Michaels Cornhill, in the city of London, in the year 1695.
