Recorded in the spellings of Edelston, Edleston, and Edlestone, this is an English locational surname from a place called Edleston in the county of Cheshire. The placename in any recognizeable spelling, is first recorded in the year 1288 as "Edelaghston" and the translation is believed to be either Edlac's house or possibly Eadwulf's house, both being a relatively popular baptismal names of the early Anglo-Saxon period around the 7th century a.d. However it is also possible that the name refers to a hunting ground, the word "edisc" signifying such a place. A possible translation being "the house in the hunting park". Early examples of the surname recordings are quite rare, but when found include Humfrey Edlestone of Winwick, Lancashire, on March 24th 1592, and Brisco Edelston, at the church of St Martins in the Field, Westminster, on October 24th 1769. The first known recording of the surname may be that of Margaret Edilston, christened at the church of St Gregory's by St Paul's Catherdral, city of London, on July 24th 1575. This was during the reign of Queen Elizabeth 1st, known as "Good Queen Bess", 1558 - 1603.
