This unusual and interesting name is a dialectual variant of the name Ashkettle, which derives from the Olde Norse personal name 'Asketill' compound of the elements 'oss', meaning god and 'ketill' a kettle, or sacrificial perhaps been given to someone involved in a religious ceremony. There are many variants of this name eg. Haskins, Haskel(l), Askel, Astil(l), Ankill, Antell, Askin, Haskings. There are no records of the name in its present form to be found in London. However, in Lancashire, one Edward Haskayne married Ann Huthersall, at St. John's, Preston, in 1778. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of John Astin, which was dated 1230 Pipe Rolls Devon, during the reign of King Henry III, 'The Frenchman', 1216 - 1272. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax.
