There are two possible sources of this surname, the first being a diminutive (little or son of) form of the name Hibbert, itself from a Norman personal name, which is composed of the Germanic elements "hild", battle, or strife, with "berht", bright or famous. Secondly, it may also be a diminutive form of Hibbs, a metronymic (from the mother) from a medieval female given name Ibb, a bee form of Isabel, itself a variant of Elizabeth, a name when owed its popularity in medieval times to the fact that it was borne by John the Baptist mother. The original Hebrew form is "Elisheva", meaning my God (is my) Oath. Among the sample recordings in London is the marriage of Ann Hibling and Thomas Dean on March 29th 1761 at St. Giles, Cripplegate, and the christening of twins Lily Eliza and Susannah Minnie Hiblin on February 17th 1875 at Christ Church, Ealing. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Adam Ibbe, which was dated 1334, in the Court Rolls of the Borough of Colchester, during the reign of King Richard 11, known as "Richard of Bordeaux", 1327 - 1399. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
